Summary

Miyax is a thirteen year old girl whose mom died when she was very young and her father, Kapugen, was missing when he was hunting seals and never had he come back. Because of this, Miyax lives with her aunt, Aunt Martha. She doesn’t like living with Aunt Martha and because of that, she’s marrying Daniel, Naka’s son, which Naka happens to be Kapugen’s close and trusted friend.
Miyax was happy living with their family until Daniel did terrible things to Miyax. After that, Miyax was terrified of Daniel and so Miyax ran away from home, to get away from her terrible husband and also to go to her pen pal, Amy, who lives in San Francisco. She plans to go to Point Hope first and then go to San Francisco. But she ends up being lost in the wild places of Alaska. But with her survival skills and knowledge, she is able to do her best to survive.
She met a pack of wolves along the way. The pack of wolves had a leader, its name is Amaroq. Every other wolf obeyed him and he leads the wolves everywhere. Miyax learned to communicate with the wolves by observing the way they act. With this skill, Miyax is able to tell the wolves that she needed help to survive, that she needed the wolves to bring her some meat for her food so she could eat. At first, the wolves ignored her and so she needed to find alternative ways to eat. But then, Amaroq started to take an interest on Miyax and started helping her. They brought food to Miyax and Amaroq even invited Miyax to sleep in their den. There, Miyax knew she was accepted by the wolf and became a member to the wolf pack.
Along with the story, lots of things happen. That is how Jello was killed by Amaroq because Jello stole from Miyax also that Amaroq was killed by hunters with airplanes and guns. She also found a bird that she named Tornait that can’t travel. She likes the bird and keeps it as a pet. After a few while, Miyax realizes that she cannot keep staying with the wolves any longer. Because of that, Miyax made a decision. She decided that she should find a village in order to find more people to help her.
Miyax then found a family that was hunting for a caribou. Miyax then stayed with the family for a few while in their house. She discovered a lot of things she didn’t know about her father. Because of that, Miyax went looking for Kapugen, her long lost father. She then went to the village and learned who her father really is. She even found where her father lived. She decided to enter the house. In the house, she sees her long lost father, Kapugen. She saw him happily married to another woman. She was very surprised, thinking that Kapugen was dead. But then she found out that Kapugen were one of those people that kills animals using planes. Because of that, she no longer cared for Kapugen, and don’t want to live with him anymore. She then learned a lot from her trip, from being lost, to finding her missing father Kapugen.
